Slicer Software Overview
What a Slicer Does
The slicer disassembles the 3D model into horizontal layers and plans the print paths for each layer: outer walls, infill, supports, bridges, transitions. From these paths, G-code is generated – a list of machine commands (position, speed, temperature) that the printer executes.
The Most Important Slicers
PrusaSlicer (free, open source)
A mature, well-balanced slicer from Prusa Research. Very good default profiles, sophisticated support algorithms, broad printer support. The basis for many other slicers.
OrcaSlicer (free, open source)
A fork of Bambu Studio, which in turn is based on PrusaSlicer. Very actively developed, many built-in calibration tools (Flow Rate, Pressure Advance, Temp Tower). Popular among Voron users and for anything that requires tuning.
Cura (free, open source)
From Ultimaker. Long the standard in the hobby sector, huge selection of printer profiles, many plugins. Compared directly to PrusaSlicer/Orca, somewhat less delicate with default profiles, but very accessible.
Bambu Studio (free)
Optimized for Bambu Lab printers (X1, P1, A1). Excellent profiles, cloud workflow, AMS multi-material support. Less useful for non-Bambu printers.
SuperSlicer (free, open source)
Another PrusaSlicer fork with an exceptional number of detailed settings. More for power users who want to tweak every screw.

Which Slicer is Right for You?
- Beginners: Use the slicer recommended by your printer manufacturer (Bambu Studio for Bambu, PrusaSlicer for Prusa, Creality Print/Cura for Creality).
- Advanced users: OrcaSlicer is currently the most popular all-purpose choice.
- Non-standard printers (Voron, RepRap): PrusaSlicer or OrcaSlicer with a custom profile.
